Cycle Tour I Circumnavigation the Iberian Peninsula I Spain and Portugal I Stage 6 -  Southern Spain

After a very short ferry ride, I arrived at the quiet port of Ayamonte, in the province of Huelva, Andalusia. It is located near the border between Spain and Portugal, at the mouth of the Guadiana River.

In this stretch of stage which from coastal views to vast agricultural areas, it offers a mix of landscapes along the Andalusian roads that pass through a series of towns located in the provinces of Huelva from Lepe, Cartaya, Gibraleón, Huelva and charming town of San Juan del Puerto. In the center of San Juan del Puerto, 12 km from Huelva I had stayed at Hostal Toscano is a marvelous hotel and is an old convent well renovated and they keep the ambiance and atmosphere of what it once was with unique experiences and well-maintained facilities. In the evening I rolled around the small town and it is a very nice place.

The following morning I cycled along roads surrounded by farming land and the first small town I passed was Niebla, located at the top of a hill that overlooks the Tinto river It is a rich historical experience is surrounded by a long of well preserved Castle walls dating back to the 12th century.

After the short visit the route continues with a panoramic landscape on agricultural fields passing by Vilarrasa, Villalba del Alcor, Escacena del Campo, Castilleja del Campo, Huévar del Aljarafe, Sanlúcar la Mayor, Espartinas until reaching Seville, the capital of Andalusia, is extends along the banks of the Guadalquivir River.

Seville is a city in Spain of Ibero-Punic origin very suitable for bicycles, with a well-developed network and it is the easiest way to get around the city and allows you to explore at your own pace and visit all the main attractions of the city. And that is exactly what I did.

After cycling here and there in this fascinating city a truly wonderful place, rich historical heritage, vibrant culture, for museums, popular neighborhoods and flamenco dancing. The place that I loved a lot was the famous square Plaza de España, located within Maria Luisa Park, surrounded by a small canal that you can also rent boats to see the splendor of the surroundings. It is truly one of the most impressive and iconic landmarks with great historical and architectural importance in Spain.

I then continued for about 15 kilometers after I had left the historic center of Seville I had reached the Camping Villsom Sevilla which was the final stop of the day

Leaving Camping Villsom Sevilla I cycled  on the "Red de Carreteras de Andalucía" which had a good lateral margin for bicycles equipped along the road with signposts (the cycling route) passing by the towns of Utrera, Las Cabezas de San Juan, Lebrija, Sanlúcar de Barrameda and  El Puerto de Santa María  "The Puerto de Santa María is a town in the province of Cadiz, Spain, is historically linked to Cristóbal Colón, especially on trips to America and The Santa María was the mayor of the three ships that Cristóbal Colón used on his first voyage to the New World in 1492.

In this location I camped at Camping Playa Las Dunas S'Anton, located near the beach and a short distance from the city center and shopping areas. After setting up the tent, I took a bike ride around the area: there were bike paths that overlooked the beaches and the sea, and in the area there was a magnificent promenade with bars and apartments, and also the Puerto Sherry with a magnificent lighthouse located at the end of the port.

The next day I left the campsite and headed towards the south coast to Cadiz on roads with various ups and downs and with very little traffic with road views of farm land and on the hills positioned the many wind turbines passing through the village of Puerto Real, the town of Chiclana de la Frontera, located the Bay of Cádiz.

After that I had reached the southernmost point of mainland Europe, in the province of Cádiz, Andalusia the town of Tarifa surrounded with its pristine white beaches located at the southernmost end of the Iberian Peninsula. Tarifa is known for being the windiest town in Europe which has wind almost year round and therefore, ideal for wind sports like kitesurfing. I had stayed at Hostal El Levante is a nice Hotel and the staff were really friendly, located a short distance from Tarifa.

Before I left the Hotel, the owner and his father wanted to have a chat, two very nice people and after a greeting I started pedaling here and there along the beaches of Tarifa, continuing on a road that initially wound along the coast and then entering between the promontories shrouded in fog and climbing in altitude until reaching 330 meters above sea level, through the Parque Natural del Estrecho which its coasts are bathed to the east by the Mediterranean Sea and to the west by the Atlantic. At the top there was a small souvenir shop / sandwich shop and a large balcony and panoramic view of the coast of Tarifa, Africa and the Strait of Gibraltar, which is where the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean meet.

Leaving the viewing platform the road was downhill until I reached Algeciras, a rather important port city located on the other side of the Gulf of Gibraltar, and the town of La Línea de la Concepción, on the border with Gibraltar, the famous British colony located on the southern tip of Andalusia. Where I had made a brave visit since I had already visited it on a cycle tourism trip.

After that I continued on the Eurovelo 8 cycle route, which offers a panoramic view everywhere of the famous Rock of Gibraltar, an imposing limestone promontory 426 meters high above the sea, nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.

Then I cycled in a small natural area of Estuario del Río Guadiaro, which is an important wetland site and from the bridge I had crossed it flowed under the The Guadiaro is a river (Río Guadiaro) then it had passed by San Roque and Manilva. In Rio Manilva he spent the night at a Bed & Breakfast located on the seafront of San Luis de Sabinillas, 300 meters from Sabinillas beach.
